Inspector Dan

We are so very sad to let you know about the passing of Inspector Dan, (Daniel White), host of Renegade Radio, on Saturday, August 26th after a long battle with cancer.

He got the name Inspector Dan because he was a home and building inspector on Kauaʻi for 5 years and everyone started calling him by that name. He moved here from Austin Texas in 2006 after selling his business called Alien Scooters. It was the first store in the country that sold electric bikes, scooters and motorcycles. There were no electric cars yet.

One of his many jobs was a DJ at various clubs. He played all kinds of music, but his favorite was Country music. It just seemed like a natural, being in Texas and all. For some reason he decided he wanted to be a stage magician. So he spent the next 10 years traveling, working on cruise ships and performing magic shows. It was a lot of fun for him and it was always a challenge bringing 3 doves, gun powder and flash paper on airplanes to get to the next show.

KKCR was the station he listened to when he got to Kauaʻi because of its diversity. It introduced him to the island in many ways, so he decided it would be a great place to volunteer his time. At first, he answered the phones during fund drives. He got to know people at the station like Den on the I-10 who let him sit in on his show for about 3 years. He noticed that the country western catalog wasn’t being represented that much so he pitched a country show to the program director and that was the beginning of RENEGADE RADIO. It was easy to pick the name because one of the clubs he worked in was named Renegades.

RENEGADE RADIO was where he got to ambush the station every Saturday from Noon until 2pm. It was one of the most popular shows on KKCR. Inspector Dan also regularly appeared on the Homegrown Garden Island Bluegrass Show singing and playing guitar in many bands including One Night Only.

Inspector Dan was a good friend to many. He was kind, funny, talented and smart. He handled his cancer with grace and positivity. We had so many long, interesting and inspiring conversations over the years. I miss him so very much. Rest in love and peace my friend.
