I had studied some Hawaiian language, culture and history, and so I volunteered my assistance to KKCR in their effort to provide more accurate information and use of the Hawaiian language. I was invited to the station to have a look around, was taught how to play CDs on the air and was soon left alone in the studio to carry on. The majority of the 4ad label music has never had much radio air play. As your 4ADJ, I hope to help local Hawaiian KKCR and global listeners garner the same love and admiration I have for these artists.

ʻĀINAʻIKE ON THE AIR

9:00amTUESDAY

9:00amTUESDAY

with Kumu Kehaulani Kekua Playlists Welina a ke aloha!  I’ve been such a dedicated fan of KKCR for years!  As the only radio station on Kauaʻi that offers live Hawaiian music programming daily, it is a huge gift offering to kamaʻāina and malihini alike here and around the world!  Over the years, I sometimes wondered what it’d be like if I had a show of my own. But it was never a really serious thought.  …Well, until just a couple of months ago!  Honestly, it still seems a bit surreal.  But everyone has been tremendously supportive, and I am so deeply grateful, humbled and honored to be a part of the KKCR ʻOhana! I am a keiki o ka ʻaina, a native Hawaiian child born and raised in Anahola, Kauaʻi. As the hiapo or firstborn, I was reared in the tradition of hānai – freely given to be raised and groomed in hula by my maternal grandmother. I was brought up in a very Hawaiian household with both my grandparents, my parents and my siblings. But it was my kūpuna, mostly my grandmother, who took the lead in raising and nurturing me. My late grandmother, Helen Kaipuwai Kekua Waiau was a hula master, descended from generations of kumu hula here on Kauaʻi. She established her hula school In 1945, and taught hula throughout her lifetime.  Upon her passing, I inherited the role and responsibilities of kumu hula. Today, I have the privilege of serving as the kumu hula of Hālau Palaihiwa O Kaipuwai.  I share this, because it was my upbringing in hula that has shaped my life.  And through the kuleana and practices of the hālau, hula nurtures and strengthens my love for my birthsands and the culture of Hawaiʻi nei. More than two decades ago, while researching and writing curriculum for a Hawaiian hospitality and cultural training project, I came across an ʻŌlelo Noʻeau, an ancient Hawaiian proverb and poetical saying: ʻELIʻELI KŪLANA ʻO ʻĀINAʻIKE.  Translated, it means, “Profound is the nature of ʻĀinaʻike”.  This saying refers to a person respected for the depth of his/her knowledge.  There’s a play on the words ʻELIʻELI which means “deep or profound” and ʻĀinaʻike which literally means, “Land of Knowledge”.  I was blown away by that discovery.  I’m still inspired by the depth of awareness that Hawaiian ancestral knowledge offers all of us! For many years, I searched high and low for this traditional wahi pana or celebrated place.  It no longer appeared on modern-day maps, where treasured Hawaiian place names had succumbed to frivolous monikers or nick-names.  And those of my generation and perhaps my own parents’ generation had too quickly, forgotten about ʻĀinaʻike.  I was determined that I’d find it one day. Well, interestingly enough, I happened across this precious place name in an extensive wind chant for Kauaʻi!  It is still a thrill for me today, having discovered that ʻĀinaʻike is an actual place here on Kauaʻi! It’s become a favorite mantra for me too.  A gentle reminder to never stop learning something new of my island home. It is my hope that I can share gems of ancestral wisdom and the beautiful culture of Hawaiʻi nei through the stories, music, history and more on my show!  The repository of Hawaiian chants, dances, music and stories are endless!  And the haku mele or music makers, composers and poets of yesteryear, today and the future is a phenomenal gift that blesses all of us everyday! Everything I do is inspired by hula.  I am an artist and lover of nature and the forest! I love to create beautiful expressions that bring healing and joy to my heart and to others near and far!.  Whether it is hand painting an exquisite silk scarf (my professional life as a designer and artist), choreographing a hula, memorizing an epic chant, or making lei and offerings, life is sweet and precious.  And I now have the opportunity to interact and engage with a global audience through the magic of KKCR air waves. Please visit and like my Facebook pages for Studio HAʻA and ʻĀinaʻike on the Air too! Me ke aloha pauʻole.  My love and aloha to all of you is endless.  I hope you will tune in! ʻO wau iho no me ka haʻahaʻa, Kumu Kēhau

Jazz with John Playlists A World of Jazz with Tom Playlists A World of Jazz - We've all heard that jazz is THE unique art form in the United States. I would say that differently. Jazz was named in the US, in New Orleans, but its roots began in the combination of the rhythm and "feel" of African music, with the harmony and instruments of European music. While improvisation happens in both traditions, Africans often found their own unique ways of playing instruments more expressively. Since its beginnings, Jazz has been cross pollinated by music from Brazil, Asia, and many other places. Some folks say that Jazz is dead. Indeed in my lifetime, I’m sad to say we’ve lost many masters, but we have new blood not only from Jazz families like Marsalis, Coltrane, and Monk, but from the schools and streets all over the US, and all around the world. Jazz has evolved over generations and in continuing to incorporate elements of Cuban (Dizzy Gillespie and Chano Pozo for example), Samba (Jobim, Almeida, Airto & Purim for example), Fusion, Funk, Hiphop, and other music. Jazz remains alive and well thanks to this growth and diversity. In this technological age we live in, many carry a library of music in their pocket. Cars connect to satellite “radio” with computer-algorithm-curated playlists. The reason to listen to radio like KKCR is to hear what you haven’t already heard before and won’t hear anywhere else. I could be happy enough playing Miles, Trane, Diz, Bird, Cannonball all night, but what I really enjoy is a mix with less meat and potatoes and more spice. In A World of Jazz, I want to share both the roots and fruits of jazz, an inclusive music without borders that celebrates the diversity of the cultures of this island chain I live on.

EQUALLY SOVEREIGN

4:00pmWEDNESDAY

4:00pmWEDNESDAY

Equally Sovereign is a show dedicated to promoting equal sovereignty for all, in all ways, where we envision a world in which all Peoples liberate each other and themselves from all forms of colonial or alien subjugation, domination or exploitation. My name is Keahi and here we take a look at our kuleana to practice and promote equal sovereignty, and in doing so we examine issues such as autonomy and self governance, civil and political rights and human rights, including the universal right of self-determination, as well as the responsibilities associated with those rights, both within and outside the Hawaiian context. As well as key current issues, both locally and around the world, I also explore practical solutions to problems related to the systematic normalization of colonialism and alien domination , the prioritization of private ownership of surplus lands and other natural resources over human dignity, as well as the exploitation of societies and their resources for the benefit of a small minority of super wealthy individuals. "If the people in question shake off the yoke and recover their liberty by their own exertions, they regain all their rights; they return to their former situation; and foreign nations have no right to determine whether they have shaken off the yoke of lawful authority, or burst the chains of slavery." -Emer de Vattel, The Law of Nations

7:00amFRIDAY

Mele No Ka ‘Oi Playlists I am so happy to be part of the KKCR ‘ohana that is sharing Hawaiian music with our listeners. It is such beautiful music!! I moved to Kaua‘i from Southern California in 1981. I am a mother of 3 and grandmother of 4. My way of preserving this beautiful island life, and supporting the culture and language is to focus on the heartbeat of Hawai`i. it’s wonderful blessing of music. I love music, to dance hula, swim, snorkle and play with my mo‘opunas on our precious island. I am a Hawaiian music retailer, with 2 locations here on Kaua‘i. I first started Hula lessons in 1975 and was privileged to have a fabulous Kumu Hula who taught us Hawaiian language during our Sunday classes, giving me the foundation for Hawaiian music and Hawaiian culture I was looking for. I am also a licensed Esthetician working part time at the Princeivlle Spa. I love our island and it’s amazing, breathtaking beauty. We are so blessed to have the privilege and honor of being here. I pray that all the generations to follow us will have the same privilege and beauty to gaze upon. www.hawaiianmusicstore.com
