The Coolest Nerds

KKCR does live DJ events, as you know, in which Aisha brings her rig and KKCR DJs spin actual vinyl records at spots around the island. I am in love with this concept for many reasons.
First, it’s a learning opportunity for a lost art. Aisha sets up the turn tables in Studio B and gives lessons to DJs on record spinning. For the younger set it’s always an eye opener to engage with the visceral music playing. It’s not easy and compared to Spotify, it’s participatory and exciting. Don’t even think about telling me how it works. It’s magic, I tell you, and I’ll keep it that way.
With the advent and popularity of digitized music and streaming services, we don’t listen to vinyl anymore. It’s just inconvenient. But at the same time, we are discovering less music we’d categorize as “hidden gems” because the bots and algorithms are trying to attract us toward the shiny stuff. Engaging with vinyl brings us to the weird of the music world.
Taking this music out of the radio station connects us to listeners and to the public and showcases the dexterity of KKCR DJs. It shows that we take this stuff of entertainment seriously this adds value to our radio station. We’re not just button pushers and our content isn’t canned. We are really doing it. I am continually surprised at how automated the radio is in current times. You don’t even have to be in the same state to send radio content; set it and forget it.
But the best part is how excited the DJs are presenting their music, live, viscerally, with the gadgets, artfully, knowledgeably, and smiling the whole time. KKCR DJs are the coolest nerds about what they do and I am forever your fan girl.
